NIEA 11th Annual Legislative Summit 2008 - Washington, DC

The 11th Annual NIEA Legislative Summit will meet from February 11 -13, 2008, in Washington, DC at the Holiday Inn Capitol and Capitol Hill. NIEA will kick off the summit on Monday morning, February 11th with the opening General Assembly meeting at the Holiday Inn Capitol. Discussions will continue on Tuesday and conclude at 4pm on Wednesday. Attendees will receive updates from key decision makers on legislation for Indian education, as well as other education-related legislation that impacts educators of Native students. The summit will provide first time attendees with training sessions on the federal political process, and how to become effective advocates.

Topics will include:
• Advocacy Training Sessions & Issues Briefings
• General Assembly Meetings
• State of Native Education Address
• Discussion on Head Start, Impact Aid, BIA Appropriations, OIE Appropriations, Special Education Issues, No Child Left Behind, Language Immersion
• Presentations from Key Political Figures
• Personal Meetings & Visits with Members of Congress and their Staff

NIEA Listening Session and Briefing on the No Child

Left Behind Act (Session 1 of 2)

The National Indian Education Association (NIEA) has drafted legislative recommendations to the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) based on input from NIEA members over the past two years. NIEA is interested in discussing concrete recommendations to strengthen NCLB, and learning of any special circumstances that need to be considered in Alaska. Participants should come prepared to discuss school program strengths and strategies to improve the existing law.
